Alma Reiss-Navarre
I am an artist from Harlem, NYC. In 2024, I received my BA in Visual Art, Dance, and Accessibility Studies from Bennington College.
There is a soft vibration or ‘hum’ omitted from all living things that I need to listen to closely. Painting helps me focus on this sound. By creating tension—between bodies in motion, color and material, or memory and presence—I witness interactions between animals, people, and landscapes. I am interested in staging moments that push the eye into versions of reality that are just beyond touch. I enjoy worldbuilding with oil, ink, paper, and wood, and questioning how identity impacts the way I carry my own body. Movement has a role in every piece, in process, and often as a product. I am heavily influenced by the history of social dances and the surreal.
