Tuning Spoon: Vol. I is a series of 49 oil paintings on wood, as well as a comic book.
After deciding to illustrate a series of personal poems, I became interested in how the traditional format of a comic can be expanded. I played with the idea of taking a book, and removing its intimacy by expanding its illustrations across a wall. The paintings (which protrude from the wall on magnetized nails) are able to be moved and restuck in different places, altering the format of the narrative(s) they tell. The slowness of oil paint as a medium helped me consider elements of the book that I coudln’t forsee.
Though the comic book I produced after the instillation does contain the text and images in a sequential format, it is only one retelling of a story that spans multiple timelines. It can be used as a map to re-assess initial readings of the paintings, or to play with as an object of its own. Tuning Spoon: Vol. I is the first in an ongoing series of comics.
